A courtesy title is a personalised style, Lord or Lady, Baron or Baroness, Duke or Duchess, issued in your name and presented the way such a thing ought to be presented: classical type, gold rules, a burgundy wax stamp and a permanent registry entry with its own number. It is a gift and a keepsake, made with a completely straight face.

What it is, and what it is not
Britain has always had two kinds of titles: the ones granted by the Crown, which are rare and hereditary, and the styles people simply use, by courtesy. A courtesy title belongs firmly in the second group. It is yours to enjoy, to print, to frame and to be called by, and it is recorded permanently in our registry so it is more than a pretty file on a hard drive.
